Mark Derosa and Mike Hessman Contracts Nontendered

on .

Atlanta has non-tendered Mark Derosa and Mike Hessman, but offered each a paycut afterward to stay with the Braves. With cheaper young players like Nick Green and Pete Orr ready to play in Atlanta, the Braves saw no reason to tender a contract to Derosa. Derosa made $725K last year in a forgettable season. He and his fans were excited that he had won his first starting job with the club at the season's beginning, but a horrible first three months saw Chipper Jones move back to the infield in July and Derosa moved back to the bench. His season then ended a week early in late September when he tore his ACL, so he didn't even get a chance to help (or hurt) the team in the playoffs. Hessman's brief stint in the majors was equally forgettable; he batted .130 in 69 at-bats despite a very successful season at AAA Richmond. Hessman has been offered a minor league contract that would send him back to Richmond, although he would most likely be invited to spring training as well. If he accepts the contract, success could land him back in Atlanta sometime in 2005.
