The Defense-Independent Pitching Percentage measures how many outs a pitcher earns without any involvement of the defense, hence why only strikeouts, walks, hit batsmen, and home runs are considered. This percentage is a valuable measure of a pitcher's control and ability to avoid making mistake pitches. DIPP = K / (K + BB + HB + HR) Over the short run, this percentage holds no real value. But over the long run, it reveals itself as a strong measure of a pitcher's ability to consistently earn outs.
