25 Man Roster Finalized

on .

Adam Bernero won the final bullpen spot, and unless Kevin Gryboski decides to start the season on the DL (which is possible) Buddy Hernandez will start the season in AAA. The acquisition of Jorge Sosa took up one of the final spots. I had thought that because Sosa was capable of pitching long relief that the Braves would send Bernero to Richmond and would use Hernandez against lefties a lot because of his change-up, even though he's right-handed. Tom Martin, who struggled mightily in camp, is the bullpen's only lefty. But the Braves think Sosa has the makeup of a set-up man. I hope that doesn't mean that Roman Colon will only be sparingly used, because he's been extremely effective since being in the big leagues last September and also this spring. Ryan Langerhans made the team as the 4th outfielder over Esix Snead despite a poor spring in batting average. I still expect him to platoon with Brian Jordan. With Tim Hudson throwing 85 pitches today in his outing, Bobby Cox did not want to use him on 3 days rest, pushing him back until Thursday. Mike Hampton pitched two scoreless innings today, and will move up to pitch Wednesday. The Braves will wear new red jerseys for 13 Sunday home games. The Braves open at Florida on Tuesday. John Smoltz gets the Opening Day start against Marlins ace Josh Beckett.
