ESPN declares Braves #1

on .

I don't quite understand how this works: the Braves have one of their worst offensive weeks ever, they're barely above .500, and yet they climbed to #1 in ESPN's Power Rankings. Okay, sure, the pitching is strong (except for the bullpen, and if you ignore opening day), Chipper Jones is batting about .380 with a pace for about 54 home runs, and Andruw Jones has a single homer and is batting just over .300. But hot streaks around the league are a bit hotter than that, and I don't see how this qualifies the Braves for a jump to #1! And, just think, the Braves are #1 in my book! I'm just wondering whether ESPN hasn't been watching Raul Mondesi play. Then again, the Red Sox and Yankees both had disappointing weeks, and the Braves were #3 behind them, and no one in their vicinity in last week's rankings outperformed them. So I guess it works out. I think maybe it's just a gift for Bobby Cox's 64th birthday, which he's celebrating today. But that works for me, too. Happy birthday, Bobby! Edit: The Braves are also #1 this week in the CBS SportsLine and Fox Sports power rankings. (Thanks Jamie!)
