Andruw Jones had a big day, hitting 2 homers including a 6th inning grand slam, as the Braves blew out the Cardinals 8-1.
Tim Hudson (8-6) started for the Braves, and pitched 7 strong innings. He gave up 1 run (another 1st inning run) on 6 hits, a walk, and struck out 4. Farnsworth and Reitsma pitched the last 2 innings scorelessly.
The Cardinals jumped out in front in the 1st with a 1-0 lead. Cardinals starter Jason Marquis looked very strong, pitching the first 4 innings without allowing a baserunner. But Andruw led off the 5th with his 1st homer of the game, and Wilson Betemit added a 2 out RBI double to give the Braves a 2-1 lead. Andruw hit a 6th inning grand slam to make it 6-1 Braves, and it was coasting from there. The Braves added 2 more runs in the 9th.
Offensive contributors: Andruw Jones was 2-4 with 2 homers, his baseball-leading 34th and 35th, had 5 RBIs, walked, and scored 2 runs. Wilson Betemit was 2-4 with an RBI and a run. Rafael Furcal was 1-4 with a walk, an RBI, and scored twice. Marcus Giles was 1-4 with a walk, an RBI, and scored.
The Mets won. All of the division's other teams play tonight, so the Braves lead the division by 5 games at the moment.
Jorge Sosa will face Chris Carpenter as the Braves try to take 2 of 3 from the Cardinals tomorrow afternoon.
