Cardinals 5, Braves 3

on .

When Chris Reitsma is off, he's way off. Maybe him having to bat in the top of the 9th messed up his rhythm. The Cardinals loaded the bases on 3 singles (2 up the middle and one infield single) and David Eckstein hit a game-winning grand slam as the Cardinals came from behind to beat the Braves, 5-3. Jorge Sosa started for the Braves, and was excellent. After escaping an early first inning jam, he shut the Cardinals down. He pitched 7 shutout innings, giving up 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 5. The Braves jumped out to a 2-0 lead, thanks to a 1st inning solo homer by Kelly Johnson and a 2nd inning solo homer by Jeff Francoeur. After that, Cardinals starter Chris Carpenter settled down, and didn't give up anything else in his 8 innings of work. With a 2-0 lead, Kyle Farnsworth came out to pitch the 8th. He got the first 2 batters out, but Pujols hit a homer to cut the lead to 2-1. Foster walked Edmonds, and Reitsma had to come in to get the last out of the 8th. The Braves got an insurance run in the top of the 9th thanks to an RBI double by Francoeur to make it 3-1. Reitsma gave up 3 consecutive singles to start the 9th, got a pop-up, then Eckstein hit the grand slam to end the game. Offensive contributors: Jeff Francoeur was 2-4 with his 8th big league homer (21st overall), doubled, had 2 RBIs, and scored. He extended his hitting streak to 9 games. Kelly Johnson was 1-3 with his 8th big league homer (his 16th overall I think), walked, and scored. Wilson Betemit was 1-3 with a walk. Andruw Jones walked twice. Marcus Giles was 1-3 and scored, extending his hitting streak to 12 games. The Marlins won, the Nationals and Phillies lost, and the Mets play tonight. The Marlins have moved into a 2nd place tie with Washington, and the Braves lead them by 5.5 games. The Braves have an off-day tomorrow, and go home to face the Giants. Horacio Ramirez will pitch against Brad Hennesey.
