Nationals 3, Braves 2

on .

16. That's the number of baserunners the Braves stranded. Jorge Sosa was good for his first 3 innings of work. He gave up a run in the 4th, and ran out of gas in the 5th, giving up 2 runs and being fortunate not to give up more. He ended up going those 5 innings allowing 3 runs on 9 hits, a walk, and struck out 3. The bullpen did nice work, with Boyer, Foster, Kolb, and Reitsma all pitching scoreless innings. The Braves got 2 runs in the 3rd, when John Patterson fell ill, and tried to pitch through it but couldn't. That was it for the offense, other than their constantly stranded baserunners. The Nationals bullpen shut the Braves out the rest of the way. Offensive contributors: Johnny Estrada was 2-4 with a double and scored. Wilson Betemit was 2-4 starting at shortstop tonight. Adam LaRoche was 1-3 and walked twice. Chipper Jones and Jeff Francoeur were 1-4 with a walk. The Phillies have lost 3 in a row. They have fallen into a tie with the Marlins for the Wild Card lead, and those teams are 4.5 games back of the Braves. The Mets have closed to within 5 games of the division lead (and half a game of the Wild Card!). The Nationals are 6 games back. Tomorrow there's a doubleheader. Horacio Ramirez is scheduled to go against Esteban Loaiza in Game 1, and John Thomson is scheduled to go against Livan Hernandez in Game 2.
