John Thomson had a better start, but got a no-decision as the Braves dropped a 1 run game against the Nationals, 4-3.
Thomson gave up 2 runs in 6 innings, although he had a fair amount of baserunners allowed: 8 hits, 2 walks, 4 strikeouts. John Foster gave up a run in the 7th. Blaine Boyer and Dan Kolb had scoreless appearances; but Chris Reitsma (3-5) gave up a 9th inning run, aided by a Brian McCann throwing error.
The Braves rallied from a 3-1 deficit, including a 2 out RBI single by Wilson Betemit in the 8th to tie it, but Adam LaRoche couldn't shed the piano off of his back and was thrown out.
Frank Robinson and the home plate umpire had a staring contest after a disputed call in between innings, and Sportscenter timed it for 44.5 seconds. It was funny.
Offensive contributors: Wilson Betemit was 4-4 with an RBI. Johnny Estrada was 2-2 with a walk. Todd Hollandsworth was 1-3 with a walk. Kelly Johnson was 1-4 with a walk.
Phillies won, Marlins lost, Mets lost, Nationals of course won. The NL East-leading Braves lead the Wild Card-leading Phillies by 4 games; the Marlins are 5 back, the Mets 5.5 back, and the Nationals 6 back.
John Smoltz will pitch tomorrow against Tony Armas. I'll have a late-night recap up eventually.
