Stunning Rotation News

on .

You know your starting rotation is good when a pitcher that would have given you over 200 innings of about league-average ball (barring injury) loses his spot in the rotation. That's the case with Horacio Ramirez. Skip Caray and Joe Simpson just announced on their TBS broadcast that when Mike Hampton is activated to start on Sunday, Horacio Ramirez will move to the bullpen. All indications to this point had pointed towards Jorge Sosa going to the pen. The Braves decided against moving a guy who was 7-1 with a 2.36 ERA and a K/9 ratio near 7 to the bullpen. Instead, Ramirez, who was 10-7 with a 4.54 ERA will go to the bullpen. He was 2nd on the team in innings pitched behind Smoltz with 144.2 IP, helping the Braves cope with a missing Hudson, Hampton, and Thomson throughout much of the summer. Ramirez was turning into a young Kirk Rueter, basically, as he was putting up decent numbers for the 3rd straight year despite horrible peripherals. Ramirez probably wasn't going to start in the postseason anyway, so it will be good to get him some extra work out of the bullpen, and he could perhaps become a key cog out there. He could become a key left-handed set-up man.
