I'll miss Furcal, but he's better off elsewhere for that kind of money. I'll be surprised if he's worth half that contract. Same for Farnsworth: I can't imagine spending that kind of money on a setup reliever. Estrada and Marte will be missed, but McCann is better so we already knew Estrada wouldn't stay, and Marte had nowhere to play in Atlanta. I'll miss Julio Franco most, because he's been a great role model for everyone while he's been around, and it's been great watching him set records in a Braves uniform. But, realistically, he couldn't stay in Atlanta forever. (Insert Father Time joke here.) Todd Pratt is a solid catcher with decent hitting abilities, so I like that signing. And, well, Renteria's improvement over Betemit may not be worth the money difference, but he'll probably outperform Furcal at half the price, and the difference in having Renteria in the lineup might be the difference in making it to the second round. I will miss Furcal's defense, though. It will also be interesting to see how the bullpen additions stack up, or if the Braves go after a starting pitcher instead and let #29 rack up 50 saves again. The payroll currently stands somewhere around $63M for next season with a couple of roster spots still left unfilled -- namely one more pitcher and someone else who can play first base occasionally. The Braves might also consider a fifth outfielder, although with Jones and Francouer playing nearly every day and Langerhans and Johnson taking turns either playing left or giving someone else a day off... the outfield situation looks fine. As long as the Braves don't sign any more Brian Jordans. Have I missed anything? anyone? The Braves still have plenty of money to spend and the roster looks very solid. Once again, it looks like John Schuerholz and Bobby Cox have played their winter cards exactly how they needed to. And as Joe Sheehan wrote last January, the only thing more predictable than the Braves winning another division championship is the media predicting they won't. Have fun! Bonus trivia: The Braves never won a playoff series with Rafael Furcal. (He was hurt during the division series in 2001.)
