Braves 4, Phillies 3

on .

The Braves were losing 3-0 going into the 7th. They had been completely shut down by Robinson Tejada. Jorge Sosa pitched into the 6th and gave up just 1 hit, but gave up 3 runs-2 straight walks and then a 3 run homer by Ryan Howard in the 4th inning. Rheal Cormier came on to pitch for Philadelphia in the 7th. Johnny Estrada led off with a single. Ryan Langerhans then doubled down the left field line, and Estrada had to stop at 3rd. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, and one out later, Julio Franco hit an RBI groundout off of Ryan Madsen. Madsen then threw a wild pitch to score Langerhans, who had gone to 3rd on the groundout. With the score 3-2, Marcus Giles drew a 1 out walk off of Ugeth Urbina in the 8th. Andruw Jones then lined a double into the left-center gap, and Giles barely scored from 1st to tie the game. With the score 3-3, Ryan Langerhans led off the 9th with a triple off of Billy Wagner (that's very impressive for the left-handed Langerhans). Betemit then hit a sac fly to score Langerhans to take the lead, 4-3. Chris Reitsma pitched a perfect 9th for his 7th save. The pitching was good tonight, although they walked the tightrope a good bit: 6 walks issued by Braves pitching. Sosa pitched 5.1 innings, giving up only the 3 run homer, allowing 1 hit, 4 walks, and struck out 4. Foster and Gryboski got out of a 6th inning jam with no damage done, and Dan Kolb, Jim Brower (3-1), and Reitsma pitched scoreless innings to finish the game. Offensive contributors: Ryan Langerhans was 2-3 with the triple, walked, and scored twice. Andruw Jones was 1-3 with a double and a walk. Adam LaRoche was 1-3 with a walk. Marcus Giles and Kelly Johnson each walked 2 times. The Nationals have won 6 games in a row, so the Braves gained no ground on them. The Braves are 5.5 games behind. They lead the Wild Card by a game and a half over the Marlins. The Phillies and Cubs are 4 games back. Kyle Davies will try to improve on his struggles against the Cubs and Kerry Wood, who was recently activated from the DL. The game will be in Atlanta, and there should be a big crowd because of it being July 4. Sportsline Recap
