Braves 5, Cubs 1

on .

Can Chip Caray and Don Sutton get any more annoying? That's like the worst pairing of announcers, topped only by Rathbun and Paciorek who we get to hear tomorrow. Greg Maddux gave up 4 runs in the 5th, and Roman Colon plus 2 relievers shut down the Cubs offense to seal the deal. Colon (1-4) pitched 7 fine innings, giving up just 1 run (a solo homer by Todd Hollandsworth) on 7 hits, 1 walk, and 4 strikeouts. Brower and Reitsma pitched scoreless innings to finish it. The Braves got one run in the first on a Kelly Johnson double to center that Corey Patterson misplayed. Giles hit a grounder that got by Neifi Perez to score Johnson. They got 4 in the 5th as Wilson Betemit reached on a 1 out infield single, Colon bunted him over, Rafael Furcal walked, Johnson singled in Betemit, Marcus Giles doubled in Furcal and Johnson, and Andruw Jones singled in Marcus. Not much else happened. There was a 2 hour rain delay in the 7th. Offensive contributors: Marcus Giles was 3-4 with a double, 3 RBIs, and scored. Kelly Johnson was 2-3 with a double, a walk, an RBI, and scored 2 times. Johnny Estrada was 2-4. John Smoltz will face Mark Prior tomorrow. Smoltz has a sore hamstring, and Prior just came off of the DL, so I predict more runs than expected will score. The gNats won by one, as you'd expect. The Marlins lost, so the Braves now lead the Wild Card by 3.5 games.
