Braves 5, Pirates 4

on .

The Braves are undefeated on this homestand at 6-0. They were tied for first at the beginning; they are now 5 games ahead of 2nd place Washington, who has lost 6 in a row and fallen out of the wild card lead. John Smoltz (12-5) started today. You know you have an ace when this is considered sub-par: 8 innings, 3 runs on 8 hits, 2 walks, 4 strikeouts. Chris Reitsma had a rare shaky 9th inning, but picked up his 14th save. The Braves jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. The Pirates got 3 in the 4th, mainly on cheap hits. Rafael Furcal tied it in the 5th with a solo homer, batting lefty. He gave the Braves the lead in the 7th with a solo homer batting righty. The Braves tacked on another run for a 5-3 lead, and hung on for a 5-4 win. Offensive contributors: Rafael Furcal was 3-5 with 2 homers (8th and 9th of the season), a double, 2 RBIs, and scored 3 times. Marcus Giles was 4-4 and scored twice. Chipper Jones was 2-4 with an RBI. Adam LaRoche was 2-3. Jeff Francoeur was 2-4. Brian McCann was 1-2 and was intentionally walked twice. This just in: Braves have made a trade. More to come. Tim Hudson will pitch against Zach Duke tomorrow as the Braves go for the 4 game sweep.
