Braves 5, Orioles 4

on .

Andruw Jones led off the bottom of the 9th and hit a game-winning walk-off solo homer off of Todd Williams that barely made it over the left field wall and left fielder David Newhan's glove. It was Andruw's MLB-leading 23rd homer. Andruw was 3-5 on the day with the homer and had 2 RBIs. This turned out to be a very good ballgame. Bobby and Leo wrung 6 shutout innings from Roman Colon to keep the Braves in the game. Bruce Chen shutout the Braves before leaving after straining a big toe and the Orioles bullpen shut down the Braves' offense through 6. After Blaine Boyer and John Foster got out unscathed in the top of the 7th, the Braves' bats came alive off of Jorge Julio in the bottom of the 7th. Wilson Betemit led off with a double, and pinch-hitter Adam LaRoche singled to knock in Betemit. Pete Orr ran for LaRoche, and was bunted to 2nd by Furcal. Julio intentionally walked Kelly Johnson to put runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out. Julio threw 2 wild pitches and walked Giles, scoring the 2nd run and putting runners on the corners. Andruw singled to right on the next pitch, knocking in Johnson and making it 3-0. Julio Franco then hit an infield single to make it 4-0 before Jorge Julio finally was lifted, and Steve Kline got the next 2 hitters out. In the top of the 8th, Jim Brower pitched himself into trouble with a 4-0 lead. After allowing 2 singles and a walk, he was lifted for closer Chris Reitsma with the bases loaded and 2 out. Reitsma walked in a run, but got the next guy out to preserve a 4-1 lead. Reitsma came out for the top of the 9th. After 2 bloop hits to lead off the inning, Brian Roberts singled to right to knock in a run. Luis Matos bunted and was safe after a collision at first base with Marcus Giles (of course) when the ball popped loose. Giles was fine, but Matos appeared to be in a lot of pain but stayed in the game. Another run scored after the ball popped loose to make it 4-3. 2 hitters and 1 out later, Rafael Palmeiro singled to tie the game. Reitsma was yanked with a blown save, and Jorge Vasquez came in. After walking the first batter, he coaxed a double play from pinch-hitter Geronimo Gil to finally end the inning. Andruw then led off the bottom of the 9th with his heroics off of Todd Williams. Roman Colon was excellent in his first big league start. I was surprised to see him stay in for 6 innings and 85 pitches, but he got the job done, allowing just 4 hits, 1 walk, and striking out 4. He threw a lot of mid to upper 90's fastballs, and the Baltimore hitters simply couldn't catch up. Jorge Vasquez (1-0) picked up the win after getting out of the 9th before Andruw's heroics. Offensive contributors other than Andruw were: Wilson Betemit, who was 2-4 and scored a run; Julio Franco, who was 2-4 with 2 infield singles; Marcus Giles, who was 0-2 but walked 3 times and scored a run; and Kelly Johnson, who was 1-4 with a walk and scored a run. Philadelphia lost, so the Braves now have a 1.5 game lead for the Wild Card. Washington plays tonight, and with a loss the Braves would be 3 games out of 1st. Sportsline recap
