Braves 7, Marlins 2 (8 innings)

on .

Julio Franco hit a pinch-hit grand slam in the top of the 8th inning to help a close 2 run lead become a blowout, as the Braves took the first game of a 4 game set from the Marlins. (The game was shortened because of rain and a grounds crew's inability to cover the infield with tarp.) Horacio Ramirez (7-4) pitched 7 decent innings to pick up the victory. He gave up just 5 hits and 1 run, walked 3, but only struck out 2. He lowered his ERA to 4.75. To be more consistently effective, I think Ramirez has got to pick up on the strikeouts. His walk rate is okay, but he only has a K's per 9 innings rate of 2.85 going into the game tonight. That is terrible. He hasn't walked that many (31), but because of his incredibly low strikeout number he's actually walked more people than he's struck out. Because of this, even more so than most pitchers, he can't afford to give up home runs. (He's among the league leaders in home runs allowed.) The Braves' scoring started in the top of the 1st inning. Furcal led off with a triple, and with one out, Giles hit a sac fly to knock him in. In the 4th inning of a 1-1 tie, Kelly Johnson led off with a single. Giles hit a hustle double to right, and Johnson had to stop at 3rd. With a base open, Andruw was intentionally walked to load the bases with nobody out. LaRoche hit a slow ground ball to score a run. Estrada did the same, and it was 3-1. In the 8th, the Braves loaded the bases off of Marlins' "relief", and a left-hander was brought in to pitch to LaRoche. Instead, Julio pinch-hit, and hit the grand slam to put the game away. Jim Brower allowed a solo home run to Miguel Cabrera in the bottom of the 8th to make it 7-2 before the rain ended the game. Offensive contributors: Marcus Giles was 2-2 with another double, a walk, and scored twice. Rafael Furcal was 2-5 with a double and a triple, and scored 2 runs. Andruw Jones was 1-2 with 2 intentional walks and scored. Johnny Estrada was 2-4. Ryan Langerhans was 1-3 with a walk. Julio was 1-1 with the pinch-hit grand slam, and of course had the 4 RBI. Jorge Sosa pitches tomorrow night against Dontrelle Willis in a rematch of the last time the Braves lost (and the game that I attended).
