Braves 7, Orioles 5

on .

I'm thinking about doing single-game recaps, because it takes more of an in-depth look at each game than the series recaps, and also because the 1st game of a series is fresher in my memory when I type. If it becomes a problem with my schedule or something, I'll go back to series recaps. But seeing as how I'm a student in the middle of summer with nothing to do, it won't be a problem now. Kyle Davies (3-2) pitched tonight and was mediocre, but got the win as the Braves hammered Orioles rookie Hayden Penn for 7 runs in just 2 innings. Davies gave up 3 of his 5 runs on a home run by Larry Bigbie after issuing a 2 out walk to Chris freakin' Gomez in the 4th inning. Otherwise, Davies was adequate, pitching 6 innings, giving up the 5 runs on 8 hits, a walk, and a strikeout. To me, it seems that his recent struggles have coincided with a decreased number of strikeouts. Blaine Boyer pitched a solid 7th, giving up a double but getting out of it with no damage done. Jim Brower got 2 outs in the 8th, then gave up a single. Chris Reitsma came in and was terrific. He pitched an inning and a third without allowing a baserunner, and nobody made solid contact. Reitsma got his 6th save. As long as KolBB and Bernero don't pitch, and Gryboski is used to start innings, the bullpen looks pretty solid. As most Braves fans know, Gryboski allows a bunch of inherited runs to score, but has a low ERA because his own runners don't often cross home plate. He seems to do fine with he starts an inning with no inherited baserunners. The Braves scored 3 times in the first inning. Marcus Giles hit a 2 run homer to right-center, and Andruw hit his 22nd homer to make it back-to-back. In the 2nd, the Braves added 3 more runs. Betemit lead off with a triple, Langerhans knocked him in, Johnson doubled in Langerhans, and Giles singled in Johnson. After Penn got into trouble in the 3rd, he was lifted and James Baldwin came in and other than an inherited run scoring, the Orioles' bullpen shut out the Braves. But the damage had already been done and the Braves hung on to win. Philadelphia lost, and Atlanta passed them for 2nd place and for the Wild Card lead. Washington won however, so the Braves remain 4 games out of the division lead. Sportsline recap
