Braves road woes continue; drop 2 of 3 to Bucs

on .

Friday:-Pirates 3, Braves 1 The Braves' offense was stymied by Kip Wells and failed to support Tim Hudson. They couldn't break through and score a run until 2 outs in the ninth, when Pete Orr drove in a run. Orr was 2 for 5 with an RBI; Wilson Betemit was 2 for 4; Adam LaRoche was 1 for 3 with a walk. Tim Hudson (6-4) pitched 7 good innings, giving up 3 runs on 6 hits, 3 walks, and struck out 4. Adam Bernero added a scoreless inning. Saturday:-Braves 1, Pirates 0 21 year old top prospect Kyle Davies put on a show in his 4th big league start; pitching 7 and two thirds innings of shutout baseball. Only the offense didn't support him (shut down by Mark Redman); therefore he didn't pick up the win, but he did improve his ERA to 0.77. John Foster got out of a bases-loaded jam in the 8th, and Chris Reitsma pitched a perfect 9th for his 3rd save. Julio Franco had the game-winning hit; an RBI double with 2 outs in the 9th to score the game's only run. Marcus Giles was 2 for 4, and had an important take-out slide to disrupt a double-play attempt to keep the 9th inning going. Sunday:-Pirates 5, Braves 2 Chipper Jones left the game after aggravating his foot injury while grounding out in his last at-bat, and hobbled into the clubhouse. I believe a DL stint is due for him. Andy Marte, your time is near. If Brian Jordan moves up to bat 3rd again, we might as well trade for Christian Guzman and bat him cleanup. By the way, the Braves lost, in another pathetic offensive display. Seth Greisinger was decent in his first Braves start, going 5 innings and giving up 2 runs, 7 hits, 1 BB, 2 K's. He left apparently because the heat drained him, and Adam Bernero (3-1) came on in the 6th in a 2-2 tie and gave up a 2 run homer to Rob Mackowiak. That was the game (this offense can't overcome a 2 run deficit); Jorge Sosa came on and gave up another run while having no control at all; it was unearned because of his own throwing error. Roman Colon pitched a scoreless 9th. The Braves offense was a 2 run homer by Ryan Langerhans, his 6th of the season-that number is tied for 3rd on the team, and in limited at-bats. Brian Jordan went 2 for 4, making sure he'll bat 3rd and continue to make outs. He's playing outstanding defense, I'll give him credit for that, but he doesn't have any business being any higher than a 4th outfielder; let alone starting in an outfield corner and batting 3rd for a contending team. What a tough road trip: 2-5 record. The Braves fell out of first as the Nationals beat the Marlins to take the division lead. The Phillies are red-hot, going 9-1 in their last 10 games and on a 6 game winning streak. The Marlins fell from 2nd in the standings to last today; and first and last place are separated by 1.5 games. Washington leads Atlanta by half a game, and the Phillies and Mets by 1 game. The Braves return home to play interleague games. The Angels visit first. John Smoltz takes on John Lackey tomorrow night, Horacio Ramirez faces Paul Byrd on Tuesday night, and Tim Hudson pitches against Kelvim Escobar on Wednesday night. An off-day is on Thursday before the A's series follows.
