Halos win 2 against Braves

on .

Monday:-Angels 4, Braves 2 Darin Erstad scored the go-ahead run in the 8th inning in a home plate collision in which catcher Johnny Estrada suffered a mild concussion as the Angels rallied to win. John Smoltz (4-5) started off great, pitching perfect baseball into the 5th, but ran out of gas late in the game. The lack of faith in the bullpen caused Bobby Cox to stay with Smoltz, who pitched 8 and a third innings, giving up 4 runs on 13 hits, no walks, and 5 strikeouts. Smoltz took a 2-1 lead into the 8th inning, but gave up 3 runs in that frame. The offense, the real culprits here, continued to not hit. Johnny Estrada was 2-3 with a run scored before leaving the game. Wilson Betemit and Rafael Furcal also contributed 2 hits. Tuesday:-Braves 3, Angels 2 Horacio Ramirez (4-4) pitched 8 solid innings to help the Braves edge the Angels 3-2. Ramirez allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, 2 walks, and 3 strikeouts. Chris Reitsma pitched a perfect 9th for his 4th save. Offensively, Ryan Langerhans was 3-4. Adam LaRoche was 2-4 with an RBI. Wednesday:-Angels 8, Braves 4 John Foster (1-1) gave up 3 runs in the 7th inning, allowing the Angels to break open a tie game. Tim Hudson started but was ineffective, pitching only 4 innings and giving up 4 runs on 6 hits, 3 walks, and 1 strikeout; and left in the 5th after having cramps. Adam Bernero pitched 2 scoreless innings in the 5th and 6th to hold the Angels in check before the decisive 7th inning. Dan Kolb pitched the 8th and gave up a run; Jorge Sosa struggled through the 9th but got out of it with no runs scoring. On offense, the Braves only had 4 hits; nobody with more than one. Ryan Langerhans was 1-3 with a walk, and hit a 2 run double. Rafael Furcal, Marcus Giles, and Adam LaRoche were the only other players with hits. The Braves have an off-day today, then host the Athletics who visit beginning Friday. Kyle Davies will take the ball Friday against Danny Haren, John Smoltz will face Kirk Saarloos Saturday, and Horacio Ramirez will go against Barry Zito in the rubber game on Sunday.
