Braves swept by Padres

on .

The Braves were swept in a series for the first time since the first series of 2003. It was the first time the Padres have swept the Braves since May 1991. Monday:-- Padres 5, Braves 3 Chris Reitsma gave up 3 runs in the 8th inning as the Padres rallied to beat the Braves. Reitsma (1-2) pitched two thirds of an inning, giving up the 3 runs on 4 hits, no walks, and a strikeout. John Thomson left the game in an injury that resulted in a trip to the DL, but before he left he pitched 4 and a third solid innings, giving up a run on 3 hits, 3 walks, and 3 strikeouts. Adam LaRoche led the Brave offense, going 3 for 4 with a double. Andruw, Estrada, Mondesi, and Thomson had the only other hits. Tuesday:-- Padres 3, Braves 2 John Smoltz pitched 8 outstanding innings, but Dan Kolb blew the save, and lost the game and his job. Kolb (1-4) only could get one out in the 9th, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits, 2 walks, and no strikeouts. He's now a middle reliever, as the Braves will use a closer-by-committee for the time being. Smoltz allowed just one run on only 4 hits, 2 walks, and 5 strikeouts. Andruw Jones hit his 10th homer, and Wilson Betemit was 2 for 3 filling in for Chipper Jones who is day-to-day with an oblique strain. Wednesday:-- Padres 8, Braves 4 Khalil Greene hit 2 homers and got 6 RBI early in the game off of Braves starter Horacio Ramirez to help the Padres sweep the Braves. Ramirez (2-3) lasted only 4 innings, giving up 7 runs on 8 hits, 1 walk, and no strikeouts. He wasn't helped by 2 misplayed popups by the Braves infield defense in the 3rd. Matt Childers made his Braves debut, giving up a run in 2 innings of work. Roman Colon made a rare appearance and pitched 2 scoreless innings. Wilson Betemit went 3 for 4 with 2 doubles as he started for the 2nd straight day in Chipper's place. Andruw hit another homer; his team-leading 11th. The Braves are off tomorrow then travel to Boston for a 3 game series beginning Friday. Tim Hudson will go against Wade Miller on Friday, a pitcher TBD(probably Kyle Davies) will face Tim Wakefield on Saturday, and John Smoltz will face Matt Clement on Sunday.
