Braves take 2 of 3 from Redbirds

on .

Record: 15-10, 2nd place, 0.5 games behind the Marlins Friday: Cardinals 6, Braves 5 It seems when there's a hyped pitching duel, that it sometimes turns out to be a offensive battle. So much for the pitching duel this time... Tim Hudson (2-1) lost only the 3rd game of his career when getting 4 or more runs of support. He was lit up for 4 runs in the first inning, and later allowed a 2 run homer to Albert Pujols. He pitched 6 innings giving up 6 runs on 9 hits, 2 walks, and 3 strikeouts. The bullpen pitched well, including scoreless innings from Foster, Gryboski, and Bernero. The offense tried to claw their way back into the game, but fell just short. Marcus Giles was 3 for 4 with a double and scored 2 runs. Brian Jordan was 2 for 4 including a 2 run homer. Andruw Jones reached base twice on a hit and a walk. He's starting to hit a bit more lately. Saturday: Braves 3, Cardinals 2 Raul Mondesi and Dan Kolb were the unlikely heroes in the game. Mondesi led off the bottom of the 9th in a tie game with his 3rd homer of the season to win the game for Dan Kolb (1-2), who pitched a perfect inning in the top of that inning. Andruw Jones was 3 for 4, as he continued to heat up since the last game of the Mets series. John Thomson pitched well, going 6 innings and giving up 2 hits on 8 hits, 1 walk, and 5 strikeouts. His ERA was lowered to 2.81. On a side note, Chipper Jones who hasn't started since last Sunday, was hit in his injured foot by a pitch, probably aggravating the bruise. He didn't even get to take the base when the umpire missed it, but instead he drew a bases loaded walk. Speaking of the umpire, Tony LaRussa was ejected during the 7th inning for arguing balls and strikes. After the game, he was quoted to say about the Braves: "Sooner or later, they're going to beat the umpires down," he said. "They argue everything. They are a class organization, but they fuss and moan about everything. Maybe that's their strategy, but that's not to be admired." His comments were made in the heat of the moment of losing a close game, and he backed off later after making the statements. Bobby Cox defused it, saying, "I'll just manage my own team." Sunday: Braves 2, Cardinals 1 For the 2nd straight start, John Smoltz did not have his lights-out stuff, but won anyway. Smoltz (2-3) pitched 6 and two thirds innings, giving up a run while scattering 9 hits, 3 walks, and striking out just one. He gave up his run in the 7th and was appearing to tire, but for the second straight time, Chris Reitsma bailed him out of a 7th inning jam. Reitsma pitched a scoreless 8th and Dan Kolb pitched a scoreless 9th for his 7th save. There wasn't much offense in the game on either side. The Braves strung some hits together in the 6th inning to score their 2 runs, highlighted by a Rafael Furcal RBI hustle double which scored Wilson Betemit who had reached following a leadoff walk. Smoltz bunted him to second for Furcal. Ryan Langerhans knocked in Furcal with an RBI single. The Braves have an off-day tomorrow, then host the Marlins for 2 games beginning Tuesday. Mike Hampton will start for the Braves Tuesday night as he faces Al Leiter in a battle of left-handers.
