NL East-leading Braves win 2 of 3 from NL West-leading Dodgers

on .

Friday: Dodgers 7, Braves 4 Adam LaRoche hit an 8th inning grand slam to take the lead by 2 in the top of the 8th for the Braves, but Milton Bradley answered with a grand slam of his own for the Dodgers in the bottom of the 8th to lead the Dodgers to victory. Jeff Weaver had shut down the Braves for most of the game while throwing frisbees, but eventually tired and gave up the grand slam to turn a 2-0 lead into a 4-2 deficit. He looked so mad that he might pull a Kevin Brown and punch the wall, but refrained. Horacio Ramirez pitched 7 solid innings in his Dodger stadium debut after growing up a Dodger fan. He gave up 2 runs on 7 hits, 1 walk, and 2 strikeouts. Chris Reitsma (1-1) picked up the loss, although he didn't pitch as badly as it appeared. He didn't strike anyone out, and the pitches he threw found holes to load the bases. Then, he gave up the grand slam. Jorge Sosa came in and gave up another run that inning, but John Foster finally got out of it with a strikeout. Offensively, there wasn't much. LaRoche was 2 for 4 with the grand slam (his 5th homer) and 4 RBI, and Johnny Estrada was also 2 for 4. Saturday: Braves 5, Dodgers 1 Mike Hampton gave the Braves and fans a scare when he left the game with an apparent arm injury, but it turned out to be only a strain to his left forearm and he should make his next start. Eddie Perez also left the game after tweaking his right shoulder on a throw down to 2nd while warming up for an inning. Anyways, Hampton left in the 3rd, and Adam Bernero (3-0) came on and allowed just one run in 3 innings to pick up the win. The Braves hit 4 solo homers in the game to help the cause--Mondesi (his 4th homer), Chipper (his 6th homer), and Andruw twice (his 7th and 8th homers). 2 of the homers were back-to-back by Chipper and Andruw off of Eric Gagne in his return from the DL. Chipper and Andruw each had 2 hits. Sunday: Braves 5, Dodgers 2 Tim Hudson (4-2) didn't have his best stuff as he gave up 9 hits in only 6 innings, but he got double plays or strikeouts when he needed them. Hudson gave up 2 runs (1 earned) on 2 walks and 5 strikeouts. John Foster came on and pitched an inning and a third of scoreless ball, Jorge Sosa pitched 2/3 of a scoreless inning, and Danny Kolb pitched a perfect 9th (!) for his 10th save. After struggling to score for the first 5 and two thirds innings off of Scott freaking Erickson, Chipper, Andruw, and LaRoche provided the Brave offense. Chipper hit his 7th homer, a 2 run shot to tie the game at 2 in the 6th. He was 2 for 4. Andruw hit a solo shot (his team-leading 9th homer) to give the Braves the lead in the 7th. He was also 2 for 4. LaRoche provided insurance with his 6th homer in the 9th, and Langerhans contributed a sac fly to score Andruw to finish the scoring. The Braves have won 10 of their last 14, improved to 23-14, and have a 2.5 game lead over the Marlins who were swept by the Padres. The Braves now travel to play the Padres, who have won 13 of their last 16. John Thomson will face someone named Timothy Stauffer tomorrow night, John Smoltz will face former Brave Darrell May on Tuesday night, and Horacio Ramirez will oppose Adam Eaton Wednesday afternoon.
