Braves hitter of the Month: Andruw Jones
Andruw hit 284/343/642 this month with 9 homers, 18 RBI, 5 doubles, a triple, and 8 walks. He was tied for 2nd in the NL in homers this month, only 2 behind Bobby Abreu. His hitting from the early part of the month until the Boston series in mid-May was unbelievable. He tailed off towards the end of the month, however.
Honorable Mention: Chipper Jones, Johnny Estrada
Braves pitcher of the month: John Smoltz
John went 2-1 with a 2.35 ERA in 38.1 innings pitched. He allowed just one homer the whole month. He walked 15 and struck out 22. With more run support and less blown saves, he could have won nearly every start.
Honorable Mention: Tim Hudson, John Foster, Kyle Davies
The Braves ended up a game over .500 in May, going 14-13. The rest of the division included the Marlins going 13-13, the Nationals 13-14, the Mets 15-12, and the Phillies 14-13. Only 3.5 games separate the first place Braves/Marlins and the last place Phillies.
