NLDS Game 2: Braves 7, Astros 1

on .

2 out RBIs sure do feel good. 1 win down, 10 wins to go. John Smoltz was just spectacular. He pitched through 7 innings, giving up 1 run on 7 hits, a walk, and struck out 5. The only run he gave up was when the Astros strung together 3 bloop hits in the 1st. Smoltz retook the MLB record of most postseason wins, improving to 15-4 in the postseason. Chris Reitsma pitched a scoreless 8th, and Kyle Farnsworth pitched a scoreless 9th with a 7-1 lead. After the Braves fell behind 1-0 in the first, Andruw led off the bottom of the 2nd with a single. LaRoche bunted him to 2nd. Francoeur was walked, but Langerhans struck out after a long at-bat. Roger Clemens then was evidently going to pitch around Brian McCann with 2 outs and Smoltz on-deck, but grooved a 2-0 pitch. McCann sent it into the right field bleachers to give the Braves a 3-1 lead. McCann is one of only 2 catchers of all-time to hit a home run in his first postseason at-bat. The other guy was someone I've never heard of from back in the 30's. In the 3rd inning, Chipper drew a 2 out walk. Andruw then singled to left-center, and Chipper went to 3rd. LaRoche then hit a sinking liner into the left-center field gap past a diving Orlando Palmeiro for a 2 out 2 RBI double. 5-1 Braves. Andruw and Francoeur added RBI hits in the 8th inning to make it 7-1. Offensive contributors: Andruw Jones was 3-4 with an RBI and scored 3 times. Adam LaRoche was 1-1, doubled, walked twice, and had 2 RBIs. Rafael Furcal was 2-4 with a walk. Ryan Langerhans was 2-4. Jeff Francoeur was 1-3 with a walk, an RBI, and scored. Brian McCann hit a 3 run homer in the 2nd that gave the Braves the lead and set the tone for the rest of the game. The Braves are off tomorrow and travel to Houston to play Game 3 on Saturday. Jorge Sosa, the Braves' best pitcher in the 2nd half, will go up against Roy Oswalt. Sosa hasn't lost a game on the road all year. He was 9-0 with a 1.81 ERA.
