The Braves are knocking the Mets out of the playoff race. John Smoltz outpitched Pedro Martinez tonight as the Braves took the 2nd game of the series, 3-1.
Smoltz (14-6) wasn't at his best, but was good enough tonight. He went 7 innings, allowing 1 run on 7 hits, a walk, and struck out 2. Reitsma pitched a scoreless 8th and Farnsworth blew them away again in the 9th.
The Braves got on the board first when Andruw Jones had an RBI groundout to score Furcal. Andruw knocked in another run with a sac fly to score Furcal again.
Julio hit a groundball to Martinez with Giles on 2nd in the 6th. Martinez paid no attention to Giles and Giles ran to the plate after passing 3rd as Martinez threw to first. Doug Mientkiewicz threw to the plate but not in time. Heads-up play by Giles and good coaching by 3rd base coach Freddi Gonzalez.
Offensive contributors: Rafael Furcal was 2-4 with a double and scored twice. Chipper Jones was 2-3 with a walk. Marcus Giles was 1-3 with a walk and scored.
The Braves have won 5 of their last 6, and 9 of their last 13.
The Marlins have moved into 2nd with a win and a Phillies loss. Also, with 2 wins over the Phillies, the Astros have moved into the Wild Card lead. The Braves lead the division by 6.5 games.
Tim Hudson will go against Tom Glavine tomorrow as the Braves go for the sweep.
