Braves 9, Nationals 7

on .

The Joneses saved the day and the Braves from a horrific loss, coming back in the 9th with homers after the Braves blew a 6 run lead. John Smoltz started and pitched like Greg Maddux in his prime. He went 7 innings, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits, a walk, and 5 strikeouts. He only needed 74 pitches. The only runs he gave up were back-to-back solo homers by Rick Short and Nick Johnson. But Bobby took him out, although it was a good idea, I think. We need to keep him fresh for more important games later... With a 6-2 lead, Blaine Boyer came in for the 8th and made me look dumb. He walked Guzman and a pinch-hitter. Foster came in and was awful. He gave up 2 hits, hit a batter, and all of those runners scored. Reitsma came in and finally got 2 outs, one was a sac fly and the 3rd batter he faced hit a go-ahead single. McBride (1-0) came in and finally got out of it by striking out Brian Schneider. It was 7-6 Nationals at the end of the inning. John Smoltz got a no-decision instead of his 15th win. One of the hits in that inning was a hard grounder that took a bad hop and hit Adam LaRoche in the head. He had to leave the game. More will come later presumably. The Braves had hit the Nationals pitching pretty well in the game. The emergency starter only lasted 2 innings, and they hit the bullpen well too. It was 6-0 in the 6th inning at one point. Wth a 7-6 deficit, Julio Franco singled to lead off the 9th. Furcal and Giles flew out. Down to their last out, Chipper Jones hit a 2 run homer into the right-center field seats. Andruw followed with an upper deck shot, his 2nd homer of the game to make it 9-7. Farnsworth shut the door in the bottom of the 9th for the save. Offensive contributors: Andruw Jones was 2-4 with 2 homers, his 48th and 49th, and walked. Chipper Jones was 2-5 with his 17th homer and hit a double, walked, had 3 RBIs, and scored. Brian McCann was 2-4 and scored twice. Rafael Furcal walked twice, had an RBI, and scored. The Marlins will lose, so the Magic Number is reduced to 13. The Braves now head to Philadelphia, and Tim Hudson will pitch against Eude Brito.
