Hampton needs Tommy John surgery

on .

The Mets' team doctor recommended that Mike Hampton get surgery. He would miss most of the 2006 season. The article says that "insurance will cover an unspecified part of his salary." (That likely means that the Braves will have a bigger payroll next year without having to pay Hampton and that they don't want other teams to know how much...) It is disappointing for Hampton, who had pitched very, very well since about the All-Star Break of 2004. He also had a strong 2003 campaign. John Smoltz doesn't know for sure yet if he'll be able to start. Kyle Davies will be on standby to start if Smoltz can't go. Chuck James has been promoted to the big leagues. I'll discuss James at more length later. This is probably to replace Hampton as a long left-handed relief pitcher.
