Ryan Langerhans, you are the freaking man. He was the hero of the tightest game of the year for the Braves. This win all but knocked out the Mets as the Braves swept them, and barring a major collapse has all but sealed the division for the Braves.
The Braves had to make 2 last at-bat rallies to win it.
Facing a 2-1 deficit in the bottom of the 9th and Braden Looper pitching, Jeff Francoeur led off with a double. McCann flew out, but Langerhans singled in the alley to tie it. No other damage could be done, as Hollandsworth made an out, Furcal was intentionally walked, and Giles struck out.
The Braves bullpen combined to give up a run in the 10th inning. Chris Reitsma hurt his back in the process. I figure there will be more news to come about that later.
With a 3-2 deficit, Chipper led off with a single to left. Andruw was hit by a pitch. Julio walked after falling behind 0-2. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Looper left the game and side-arming right-hander Shinjo Takatsu came in. Francoeur and McCann both popped out and nobody could score. Bases now loaded, 2 outs for Langerhans. He took the lead in the count 3-1, but Takatsu threw a strike at the knees. With a 3-2 count, bases loaded and 2 outs, Langerhans then fouled off a couple of pitches. He lined the next pitch into the left-center field alley to score the Joneses and end it with a walk-off single.
The late inning dramatics overshadowed a dandy pitching duel. Tom Glavine had perhaps his best outing of the season when the Mets needed it the most. He pitched into the 8th and gave up only 1 run.
Tim Hudson gave the Braves 8 solid innings, giving up 2 runs on 8 hits, 3 walks, and 3 strikeouts. Boyer pitched a scoreless 9th. Reitsma got an out in the 10th but allowed 2 baserunners before leaving the game. Brower gave up a hit to load the bases. Foster (4-1) gave up another hit that scored 1 run, but then got a lineout double play.
Offensive contributors: Ryan Langerhans was 3-4 with a double, a walk, had 3 RBIs, and scored. Jeff Francoeur was 2-5 with a double and a run. Chipper Jones was 1-3, walked twice, and scored. Rafael Furcal was 1-4 with a walk and an RBI. Andruw Jones was 1-4 with a run and was hit by a pitch.
The Marlins won and the Phillies got swept by the Astros. The Magic Number I believe is 17.
The Braves have an off-day before heading to Washington on Friday. Jorge Sosa will pitch against Esteban Loaiza.
