Pedro Martinez was on his game, and threw a complete game shutout with 10 strikeouts.
John Smoltz (14-7) was pretty good, but would have had to throw a shutout just to get an ND. He gave up 4 runs in 7 innings on 7 hits, 0 walks, and struck out 5. He gave up a 2 run homer and the Mets manufactured 2 more runs with stolen bases and timely hits. Kolb threw a scoreless inning.
The only chance the Braves had was in the 9th. Furcal led off with a double, and Giles singled with Furcal going to 3rd. But Pedro struck out Chipper and Andruw, and after a LaRoche walk, Francoeur flew out to end the game.
Offensive contributors: Marcus Giles was 3-4 with a double. Rafael Furcal was 2-4 with a double.
The Phillies and Marlins are playing each other and are tied. One of them will win and cut the lead to 5 games, and the Magic Number will still be 10.
Tim Hudson will pitch against Steve Trachsel tomorrow afternoon. Recap will come tomorrow night.
