That sucked. This series has all the look of a good team playing with desperation (Phillies) versus a team that's only going through the motions and coasting (Braves).
The Phillies know how to hit Horacio Ramirez (11-9). 3 of Ramirez's 9 losses have been to Philadelphia, and all have been blowouts. Tonight, Ramirez gave up a lot of cheap hits and wasn't helped by his defense, and a Ramon freaking Martinez grand slam was the big hit. Ramirez lasted only 3 innings, giving up 7 runs (6 earned) on 8 hits, a walk, and 2 strikeouts.
The bullpen, as usual, sucked. Anthony Lerew pitched a scoreless 4th, but gave up 3 runs in the 5th. McBride pitched the 6th and gave up a run. Brower gave up a run in the 7th. Kolb pitched a scoreless 8th.
At least Boyer, Foster, Reitsma, and Farnsworth got the night off. And maybe the Braves got a bad game out of their system tonight.
There was a good thing to come out of this game. Andruw hit his 50th homer. It was also his 300th career homer.
Offensive contributors: Andruw Jones was 2-4 with his 50th homer and scored twice. Kelly Johnson was 1-2 with a 2 run triple.
The Marlins lost to the Astros. The Phillies have tied the Marlins for the Wild Card lead and 2nd place in the NL East. (The Astros are half a game back in the Wild Card race.) The Braves lead the division by 5 games.
Jorge Sosa will go against Phillies ace Brett Myers tomorrow night as the Braves try to avoid a 4 game sweep.
