This is a game the Braves should have won, but deserved to lose. Ramon Ortiz shut down the Braves, but Horacio Ramirez battled him to a draw.
Horacio Ramirez gave the Braves 7.2 fine innings, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits, 3 walks, and struck out 7. McBride got the last out in the 8th, Farnsworth pitched a scoreless 9th, Reitsma a scoreless 10th, and Foster a scoreless 11th.
Dan Kolb gave up 5 runs in the 12th to pick up his 7th loss. Why Blaine Boyer didn't pitch today you can guess as well as me.
Marcus Giles would have been the hero had the Braves won. He hit 2 homers, then tripled and scored in the 8th to tie the game. He also played exemplary defense.
The Braves had a chance to score and win the game in the 11th. Giles got on with a leadoff error. After he stole 2nd, Andruw was intentionally walked, and Giles reached 3rd on a wild pitch. LaRoche swung and missed 3 pitches in a row right down the middle. Francoeur was intentionally walked to load the bases, but Langerhans grounded out.
Offensive contributors: Marcus Giles was 3-5 with 2 homers (his 9th and 10th), a triple that just missed being a homer, had 2 RBIs, and scored 3 times. Jeff Francoeur was 1-4 with a walk. Andruw Jones walked twice.
The Nationals beat the Phillies, and the Mets beat the Marlins. The Braves have a 5 game lead.
The Mets come to town. John Thomson will pitch against Steve Trachsel tomorrow.
