Marlins 4, Braves 3

on .

The Braves lost a controversial game as the Marlins avoided the sweep. Lance Cormier kept the Braves in the game, going 6 innings and allowing 3 runs on 7 hits, a homer, 0 walks, and struck out 6. He probably earned at least one more start until Davies is ready. The Braves rallied to tie the game at 3 when Jeff Francoeur homered in the 6th on a pitch just off the ground. But Tyler Yates (1-4, 4.60) continues to suck, and continues to lose games for the Braves. A leadoff walk in the 7th came back to haunt him as the runner scored and it ended up being the difference in the game. Hopefully he won't pitch in any more high-leverage situations, at least until he starts to pitch like he did in July with better control. In the 9th inning, Francoeur led off with a hustle double and Diaz was hit by a pitch. With 2 runners on base and no outs, Adam LaRoche, with the 2nd most power on the team, decided to bunt (as I'd suspected, I didn't think Bobby called it right after it happened) and bunted into a third to first double play. Bobby said afterwards that he didn't know what LaRoche was trying to do. McCann, who was on-deck, was intentionally walked (and would have been anyway even if the bunt was successful). Langerhans flew out to end the game. Even if LaRoche's bunt had been successful, it ultimately would have been a bases loaded situation with 1 out for Langerhans and Orr. If he hits away, there are runners on first and second with no outs for LaRoche and McCann, two of the hotter hitters in baseball. Basically, it is the 2nd big boneheaded play of the year by LaRoche that may have cost the Braves 2 games. Offensive contributors: Jeff Francoeur was 3-4 with his 23rd homer, doubled, had 2 RBIs, and scored twice. Edgar Renteria was 1-3 with a walk. The Braves now host the Pirates. John Smoltz will go against Zach Duke in the opener.
