Chipper Jones tied the major league record for consecutive games with an extra base hit at 14, a record that has stood since 1927, and the Braves swept the Padres.
Chuck James (4-0, 3.72) did just enough to get a win, going the required 5 innings and allowing 5 runs on 6 hits, 1 homer, 1 walk, and 3 strikeouts. I've noticed that he has a lot more problems in the 2nd and 3rd times through the order.
The bullpen did a good job today, pitching 4 scoreless innings. Paronto pitched the 6th, Barry and McBride pitched a scoreless 7th, Yates the 8th, and Ray the 9th.
The Braves scored 6 times in the 4th inning, pulverizing Jake Peavy. It included Chipper's record-tying homer. They added 3 insurance runs in the 8th.
Offensive contributors: Everyone again. Chipper reached base 5 times with 3 hits, 2 walks, and his 14th homer. Renteria also had 3 hits. McCann had 2 hits including his 8th homer. Betemit and Francoeur also had 2 hits. Andruw was the only one without a hit, but he walked twice.
The home plate umpire had a very short fuse today, ejecting Bochy and the Padres bench coach in the 5th, then ejecting/baiting Francoeur and Bobby in the 7th with little apparent cause. Francoeur struck out on a foul tip, then said something apparently harmless to the umpire with a smile on his face. The ump chased him, yelling, then Francoeur turned around and then the umpire threw him out. It turned out to not matter, but I guess it will be a fine for Francoeur.
The Braves now go to St. Louis, and HoRam will pitch against Jeff Weaver as the Braves go for their 6th straight win.
