Braves 11, Padres 3

on .

The Braves scored runs and pitched well to take the 2nd game of the series. John Smoltz (7-5, 3.41) pitched 7 shutout innings, allowing 5 hits, 1 walk, and struck out 6. Macay McBride started the 8th, and gave up a 3 run homer then got 3 more baserunners on. Paronto had to come on to get the last out. Ray pitched a scoreless 9th. It was a scoreless game until the 4th, when a red-hot Andruw homered again. Thorman homered in a 3 run 5th inning. McCann hit a 3 run homer in a 5 run 6th inning. Betemit hit a 2 run homer in the 7th to cap the scoring. Offensive contributors: Andruw's homer was his 22nd, McCann and Betemit's homers were their 7th, and Thorman's homer was his 3rd. Betemit, Chipper, Andruw, McCann, Thorman, and Smoltz each had 2 hits. Chipper had a double to extend the record streak of consecutive games to 13. With an extra base hit tomorrow, he'll tie Paul Waner's National League record. Horacio Ramirez Chuck James will pitch tomorrow against Jake Peavy as the Braves try to sweep. Update: I like the idea of pitching James instead of Ramirez. It's a bigger park which is good for James' flyball tendencies.
