Braves 15, Padres 12 (11 innings)

on .

The game might have secretly been played with aluminum bats. The teams combined to use 17 pitchers. The Braves scored 4 runs in the first inning before making an out off of Padres starter Chris Young, including homers by Chipper and Andruw. Young was knocked out after 3 plus innings. But Tim Hudson still sucks, and he gave up a 5-1 lead in the 3rd, and he too was knocked out after 3 innings. He allowed 5 runs on 9 hits, 2 homers, 0 walks, and 1 strikeout. The Braves retook the lead in the 4th with 2 runs, and scored another in the 5th to make it 8-5. But Kevin Barry allowed a Piazza 3 run homer to tie it in the 6th. The Padres added a run in the 7th to take a 9-8 lead. Trevor Hoffman came in to pitch the 9th for a save opp. After Giles singled and Renteria walked, Andruw hit a 3-2, 2 out, 2 run double in the left field corner to score them and give the Braves a 10-9 lead. McCann knocked in Andruw to make it 11-9. But the Braves had used all their relievers except for Sosa and Yates. Sosa came on to try for the save. He sucked, and blew the lead and barely got out of the inning without losing it. The game went to extras at 11-11. LaRoche hit the first pitch for a homer in the 10th to make it 12-11. But Sosa was still pitching, and after consecutive singles he got a double play that scored a run to tie it. The Braves got 3 runs off of Clay Hensley (usually a starter, but San Diego was out of relievers) in the 11th including a LaRoche 2 run double. Yates came on to pitch the bottom of the 11th scorelessly for the save. Offensive contributors: Everyone. Ryan Langerhans was the only one without a hit, but he walked twice. Adam LaRoche had 4 hits; his 14th and 15th homers, and had a double for a career-high 5 RBIs. Chipper Jones had 3 hits, homered twice, which were his 12th and 13th of the season to extend his record streak of games with an extra base hit. Andruw Jones had 3 hits, including his 21st homer and the go-ahead double in the 9th inning. Renteria, McCann, and Francoeur each had 2 hits. John Thomson has been placed on the DL with shoulder inflamation, and Peter Moylan has been called up for a few days. I know Richmond isn't exactly full of great pitchers, but there isn't a better reliever than Moylan? Moylan will go back down when Thomson's turn to start comes and a starter will be promoted. John Smoltz will pitch against Chan Ho Park tonight.
