John Smoltz put on a show and the Braves picked up the 2nd win of the 4 game series.
Smoltz (6-5, 3.60) went 8 innings and allowed 1 run on 6 hits, 1 walk, and struck out 10. He threw 120 pitches, but because of the break he'll get an extra day of rest. Also, he was 2-3 and knocked in an important insurance run in the 7th.
Give a lot of credit to Reds starter Aaron Harang. Harang took a shutout to the 7th, leading 1-0. After getting Chipper and Andruw out on 2 pitches, McCann singled. Francoeur then homered to center, a ball that scraped over the top of the wall to give the Braves a 2-1 lead. After LaRoche doubled on a misplay, and Langerhans was IBB, Smoltz singled up the middle to score the 3rd run.
The Reds bullpen is actually worse than ours, and they left Harang in for the bottom of the 8th. He gave up another run on a McCann 2 out RBI double after Chipper tripled. Harang got the complete game, throwing 135 pitches.
Ken Ray came on and pitched the 9th for the save, striking out 2.
Offensive contributors: Brian McCann was 2-4 with a double, an RBI, and scored. John Smoltz was 2-3 with an RBI. Edgar Renteria was 1-3 with a walk to extend his hitting streak. Jeff Francoeur was 1-4 with his 16th homer and had 2 RBIs. Adam LaRoche was 1-3 with a double and scored. Giles and Chipper each had hits to extend their hitting streaks; Chipper's was a triple and he later scored.
The game lasted 2 hours and 27 minutes.
The Braves will go for 3 out of 4 tomorrow, as John Thomson pitches against Bronson Arroyo. I think everyone on the staff could be available to pitch except for Smoltz and maybe Barry.
