Phillies 6, Braves 5

on .

Ken Ray had a bad outing and the Braves dropped the first game of the 4 game series. John Smoltz kept the Braves in the game, going 7 innings giving up 3 runs on 7 hits, 2 homers, 3 walks, and 7 strikeouts. It was 3-3 going to the bottom of the 8th after a Thorman 2 run homer and a Renteria solo shot. Phillies starter Cory Lidle pitched a good game. But Ray (1-1, 3.05) gave up 3 runs, including a mental lapse on which he forgot to cover first on a groundball that cost the Braves big. McBride got the last out. Francoeur hit a 2 run homer to cut it to 1, but it was too much to overcome against Tom Gordon. Offensive contributors: Jeff Francoeur was 2-4 with his 18th homer and had 2 RBIs. Edgar Renteria was 2-4 with his 10th homer. Scott Thorman was 1-3 with his 4th homer and had 2 RBIs. Adam LaRoche was 1-3 with a walk and scored. Chipper had a hit to extend his career-high hitting streak to 20 games. Chuck James will go against Brett Myers tomorrow in a 4:05 ET game on Turner South.
