Braves 4, Devil Rays 1

on .

That was the most impressive 1st major league start ever. Chuck James (1-1, 1.86), rated the 7th best prospect in baseball by BA, pitched 8 innings and allowed 1 run on 3 hits, 4 walks, and struck out 8. The run was a gift, after a 2 out double in the 7th the shortstop Betemit misplayed a popup in deep left field that was scored a double. Sosa pitched a scoreless 9th for the save, with a walk and a strikeout. The Braves scored in the 3rd inning when LaRoche led off with a double. Pratt bunted him to 3rd, and LaRoche scored on a sac fly from Giles. With the score still 1-0 in the top of the 7th, the Braves got 2 runners on, and with a 2-2 count and 2 outs, Pratt homered to make it 4-0. Offensive contributors: Adam LaRoche was 2-3 with a double, walked, and scored twice (against a left-hander). Todd Pratt was 1-3 with his 2nd homer and had 3 RBIs. To make room for James on the roster, Remlinger was DFA'd. Mike Remlinger had pitched 22.1 innings with a 4.03 ERA, allowing 27 hits, 2 homers, walked 9, struck out 19, and had a 1.61 WHIP. I'm a little surprised they couldn't find a taker for him, but he has been awful lately plus he's 40. It does mean that Kevin Barry, after spending several solid years at Triple A, will finally get his shot in the big leagues. The Braves now go to New York to play the Yankees and Tim Hudson will pitch against a struggling Randy Johnson.
