Marlins 6, Braves 5 (10 innings)

on .

Former Braves scrub Wes Helms hit 2 homers to help the Marlins outlast the Braves. Thomson pitched 6 solid innings, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits, 2 walks, and 3 strikeouts. He left while warming up for the 7th after developing a blister. The Braves hit Willis pretty good, getting 5 runs including a 2 run homer by Francoeur and a solo homer by Giles. Paronto pitched a scoreless 7th Ken Ray was brought in to pitch the 8th against the middle of the order. For some reason, he or the Braves have decided to change his pitching style. Tonight, he was throwing almost all fastballs, all at 94-95 MPH. MLB hitters can time it if they see it over and over. Ray threw maybe 3 changeups and 2 breaking pitches out of 35. I don't think he threw any sinkers. This, despite previously dominating hitters with changeups and sinkers. Who decided to do this? Was it Ray, Pratt, or McDowell? Why?!? Anyway, he blew a 5-2 lead after Helms tied the game on a homer. The Braves loaded the bases with 1 out in the 9th, couldn't score. Got a runner to 2nd with 1 out in the 10th, couldn't score. It was impossible for the Braves to win after that. Villarreal (7-1, 4.99) gave up a double to Miguel Cabrera and hit Cody Ross in the face with a fastball while Ross was trying to bunt him over. (Ross left the game bleeding profusely from the mouth.) Remlinger came in to throw one pitch, and on a bunt attempt he threw the ball into left trying to get Cabrera at 3rd. Ballgame. Offensive contributors: Jeff Francoeur was 2-5 with his 14th homer and had 3 RBIs. Matt Diaz was 3-4 and scored. Marcus Giles was 2-5 with his 4th homer. Edgar Renteria was 2-5 with 2 runs. Chipper Jones was 1-4 with a double and walked. Andruw Jones was 1-4 and walked. Will the Braves ever cut Jordan lose? He started against the left-hander and went 1-4, with less than impressive 1st base defense. Possibly, the Braves might put him on the DL with "too old to play" or something. Sosa loses to Ricky Nolasco tomorrow. Eventually, something has to give, doesn't it?
