It's just not our season.
Smoltz went 7 innings, allowing 1 run on 6 hits, 2 walks, and struck out 5. He got no help from the rest of the team as usual.
The Braves offense got shut down by Chien Ming Wang. They got one run in the 4th when Renteria led off with a double and then Andruw doubled him in. They scored the 2nd run when McCann had an RBI single.
With a 2-1 lead in the 8th, Ray gave up a homer to Giambi. After walking 2 more, he was taken out. Paronto came in with 1 out and struck out the next 2 batters.
Paronto, McBride, and Villarreal got the Braves to the 12th. Giles hit a homer in the top of the 12th to give the Braves a 3-2 lead.
Sosa came on to attempt a save. After getting Jeter to ground out on a nice play by Renteria, he walked Giambi. A-Rod then hit a 3-1 pitch to New Jersey and the Braves lost.
Offensive contributors: Chipper Jones was 3-6 with a double and scored. Andruw Jones was 2-5 with a double, a walk, and had an RBI. Brian McCann was 2-5 with an RBI. Marcus Giles was 1-5 with his 5th homer and walked. Jeff Francoeur was 2-6.
The Braves now host Baltimore (and Leo Mazzone) after a day off and Chuck James will pitch against Daniel Cabrera.
