Not the most well-played game ever, but it's an Opening Day win.
Andruw Jones and Adam LaRoche hit 3 run homers, and Ryan Langerhans added a solo shot. Edgar Renteria had a successful Braves debut including a 2 run double.
Tim Hudson pitched okay for 4 innings, but threw way too many pitches in the process. Seemingly he was going to a full count on every hitter. He ran out of gas in the 5th as 4 runs scored to cut an 8-1 lead to 8-5, while Hudson couldn't get an out. He ended up going 4 plus innings, giving up 5 runs on 6 hits, 3 walks, and struck out 3.
Lance Cormier got 3 outs in the 5th, giving up one inherited run but none of his own. Mike Remlinger and Oscar Villarreal combined to pitch the next 2 innings scorelessly.
Blaine Boyer started the 8th. I don't think he's healthy, or quite back in shape yet. His fastball was only getting about 90 on the ESPN radar gun, and his control wasn't very good. He ended up giving up 3 runs and got only one out. Thomson came in and struck out a batter then gave up a double. Reitsma had to come in and strike out the last batter with the tying run at the plate.
Reitsma then gave up 2 runs before finally nailing it down for the save.
The Braves had big innings in the 1st and 5th along the way to the win. They overcame 3 errors.
Offensive contributors: Andruw Jones was 2-4 with a homer, a walk, 4 RBIs, and scored twice. Marcus Giles was 2-3 with a walk, a sacrifice bunt, and scored twice. Edgar Renteria was 2-5 with a double, 2 RBIs, and a run. Adam LaRoche was 1-5 but with a 3 run homer. Ryan Langerhans was 1-4 with a homer. Chipper Jones was 1-3 with 2 walks, an RBI, and scored twice.
Tomorrow night is a late game. John Smoltz will pitch against Brad Penny.
