Braves make first cuts

on .

The first round of cuts were Scott Thorman, Brad Baker, Jose Ascanio, Luis Hernandez, Martin Prado, Josh Burrus, Kevin Barry, Clint Sammons, and Jonathan Schuerholz. Kevin Barry being cut this early is a bit of a surprise as he's pitched well, but Bobby said that he was good and the Braves could promote him to the big leagues later. John Foster could need Tommy John surgery, but right now the Braves will prescribe rest and see how his inflamed ulnar nerve fares. Macay McBride has a strained forearm, a minor injury and is basically day-to-day. Wilson Betemit is also day-to-day with a strained rib cage. Blaine Boyer's shoulder is starting to feel stronger, and he finally throw to live batters as the Braves are bringing him on slowly. Mike Remlinger has a chance to make the team after throwing 2 perfect innings in his last outing and because the other left-handers McBride and Foster are hurt. If the Braves get desperate enough for left-handed relievers, they might change Chuck James into a reliever temporarily. Evidently, the battle for the closer's spot is down to being between Reitsma and Devine.
