The Padres rallied to win against the Braves bullpen to salvage the final game of the 3 game series.
John Thomson was terrific again. He pitched 6 shutout innings, allowing just one hit, 0 walks, and struck out 6. He deserved a win, but for the second straight start the bullpen blew the lead.
Ken Ray started the 7th with a 3-0 lead and didn't fool anyone. Brian Giles homered, Rob Bowen and Adrian Gonzalez hit consecutive doubles, then Gonzalez scored after Ray left on a sacrifice fly.
Villarreal got the 3 outs in the 7th.
Remlinger (1-1) came in for the 8th with a 3-3 tie. Dave Roberts led off with a sinking liner that Langerhans dove for and missed (it should have been caught). Roberts ended up with a triple, and scored on an Eric Young infield single. Remlinger got the next 3 men out.
Cormier pitched a perfect 9th.
The Braves had 2 hits in the 9th, but Trevor Hoffman closed the door.
Offensive contributors: Andruw Jones was 2-4, hit his 4th homer, and walked. Marcus Giles was 1-4 with a double and a walk. Wilson Betemit was 1-3 with a walk and scored. John Thomson was 1-3 with an RBI double. Todd Pratt was 1-2 with a walk.
The Braves now travel to New York for a showdown with the Mets. The first game doesn't look promising, with struggling Jorge Sosa going up against Pedro Martinez.
