The Braves salvaged the last game of the series, routing the Mets.
Smoltz (2-2) was terrific on 3 days rest, going 6 innings and allowing a run on 3 hits, 2 walks, and struck out 8. Ray pitched a perfect 7th and McBride pitched the last 2 innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned).
The Braves got on the board first in a bizarre 2nd inning. McCann led off with a single to center. Jordan (getting the start for Andruw who has a sore back) then hit into a double play, but the 2nd base umpire rightly called Jose Lima for a balk, erasing the play. McCann went to 2nd, then Jordan struck out. Langerhans then reached on an infield single that Matsui misplayed, and McCann went to 3rd.
With one out, Smoltz missed a squeeze sign but had a swinging bunt anyway. As
Langerhans McCann raced to the plate, Paul LoDuca fielded the ball and attempted to tag Langerhans McCann, but Langerhans McCann was ruled safe and LoDuca went insane. He spiked the ball and it rolled into foul territory. (Replays were inconclusive about whether or not LoDuca did tag Langerhans McCann.) LoDuca was ejected but the play was not over. With a live ball, McCann Langerhans took 3rd base and Smoltz took 2nd. The umpires then ruled that even though the ball was laying in foul territory in nobodyís possession that the Mets called time, and made Smoltz go back to first. Bobby then got mad and argued and was ejected. (Iím not sure how time could be called when a live ball is laying on the ground.) McCann Langerhans was allowed to stay at 3rd, and one out later Renteria knocked him in.
Jordan homered in the 3rd to give the Braves a 3-1 lead. The Braves released their frustrations in the 5th inning, scoring 10 runs over the next 3 innings highlighted by Jeff Francoeurís 3 run homer.
Offensive contributors: Francoeur was 3-6 with his 6th homer, a triple, and had 4 RBIs (He has a 6 game hitting streak). Brian McCann was 3-4 with a double, 3 RBIs, and scored. Chipper Jones was 2-4 with a double, 2 walks, had an RBI, and scored twice. Edgar Renteria was 2-5 with an RBI and scored, extending his hitting streak to 23 games. Ryan Langerhans was 2-5 and scored. Brian Jordan was 1-3 with a homer and scored twice. John Smoltz was 1-2 with a double, a walk, an RBI on a 2nd squeeze attempt, and scored. Adam LaRoche drew 3 walks.
The Braves are off tomorrow, then try to continue getting well against Florida. John Thomson will pitch Tuesday against Brian Moehler.
