The Braves won a pitching duel to salvage the last game of the series.
Hudson (4-3) pitched 8 shutout innings, allowing 6 hits, 3 walks, and struck out 5. He pitched into and out of a couple of jams. He threw 122 pitches.
Reitsma came in to start the 9th. After striking out the first batter, he walked pinch-hitter Damian Jackson. After Craig Counsell grounded out, Eric Byrnes doubled into the right field corner to score a run to cut it to 2-1. Bobby had enough, and yanked Reitsma.
The left-hander Macay McBride came on, and after issuing a walk to Chad Tracy, struck out Luis Gonzalez to end the game for the save. I think that Reitsma is no longer the closer.
Former Brave Juan Cruz took a perfect game into the 5th inning of a scoreless game. The Braves got a couple of runners on in the 5th, but couldn't break through. However, in the 6th, Hudson got a leadoff walk. Giles bunted him to 2nd. Renteria doubled to score Hudson to make it 1-0, and then Renteria advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch. Chipper walked, but Andruw knocked in Renteria on a slow groundout to make it 2-0.
Offensive contributors: Edgar Renteria was 1-3 with a double, walk, RBI, scored, and now has another hitting streak at 10 games. Jeff Francoeur was 1-3 and drew his 2nd walk of the season.
The Phillies won, and the Mets play tonight.
The Braves DFA'ed Travis Smith and called up Brayan Pena to get another catcher on the roster.
Smoltz will pitch against Jake Peavy tomorrow in a rematch of the April 15th pitching duel, as the Braves now head to San Diego.
