John Smoltz outdueled Jake Peavy again as the Braves took the first game of the series, 3-1.
Jake Peavy set a single game Padres record for strikeouts tonight, striking out 16 Braves. But Ryan Langerhans, who hadn't homered since the 4th game of the season, hit a 2 run homer in the 2nd inning to give the Braves a 2-0 lead.
Smoltz (4-2) threw 7 shutout innings, allowing 6 hits, 1 walk, and struck out 5. (He threw 121 pitches.) Ken Ray pitched the 8th, giving up a solo homer to Mike Piazza. Every run Ray has given up this year has been against San Diego. Unbelievably, Reitsma pitched a perfect 9th for his 8th save. He's Jekyll and Hyde out there.
After Piazza's homer cut it to 2-1 in the 8th, Chipper hit a solo homer to lead off the 9th to make it 3-1.
Offensive contributors: Ryan Langerhans was 1-4 with a 2 run homer, his 3rd homer. Chipper Jones was 1-4 with his 4th homer.
Both the Mets and the Phillies were off tonight, so the Braves moved within 1 game of the Phillies and 4 games of the Mets.
Jorge Sosa will pitch against Mike Thompson tomorrow.
