Braves 6, Cubs 5

on .

Most. Bizarre. Game. Ever. The Braves scored a run in the first without a hit. Giles, Chipper, and LaRoche all walked to load the bases. JEFF FRANCOEUR drew a 2 out bases loaded walk, which is irony making fun of itself. The Braves led 1-0 into the 4th, until the Cubs got a couple of bloop hits and then a Jacque Jones double to give them a 2-1 lead. Freddy Bynum (who?) hit a 2 run homer to make it 4-1 in the 6th. Carlos Zambrano took a NO-HITTER through 2 outs in the 7th. Wilson Betemit broke it up with a pinch-double, then Marcus knocked him in with a 2 out RBI single to make it 4-2. (Zambrano allowed 2 hits, walked 6 and struck out 8.) But Macay McBride, relieving Hudson in the 7th, gave it right back on a 2 out double to Michael Barrett that Andruw MISPLAYED. 5-2 Cubs. Bob Howry gave up a leadoff walk to Chipper then Andruw singled. Enter Scott Eyre. After a pinch-hitting Jordan was robbed by Roddy Cedeno, Francoeur had an RBI groundout on a 3-1 bad pitch and Diaz struck out. Paronto started the 8th and got into a jam, but Remlinger struck out the next 2 batters to get miraculously out of it. Bottom of the order due up in the 9th. Pete Orr and Brayan Pena, the last 2 guys on the bench, pinch-hit and both singled off of Ryan Dempster. Dumpster threw a wild pitch, allowing the runners to reach 2nd and 3rd, 0 outs. Giles walked on a full count. Renteria walked on a full count to force in a run. 5-4, still nobody out with the bases loaded. Dumpster finally made some good pitches and struck out Chipper. 1 out. Andruw then hit a long fly ball to the warning track. Pena scores to tie it, but Neifi Perez bobbles the relay and Giles comes all the way from 2nd to score on the sacrifice fly. Jordan flied out to end the inning. 6-5 Braves. Instead of sending in Reitsma after 2 good outings, Bobby makes the right call and brings Ken Ray in to pitch. Ray pitched a perfect 9th with a strikeout to record the save. Offensive contributors: The Braves only had 5 hits but walked NINE TIMES. Marcus Giles was 1-3, walked twice, had an RBI, and scored twice. Andruw Jones was 1-3, walked, and had an RBI. Chipper and LaRoche both walked twice. Francoeur walked and had 2 RBIs. Braves pinch-hitters were 3-3: Betemit doubled, Orr and Pena singled. Hudson went 6 innings, allowing 4 runs on 8 hits, a walk, and struck out 2. Remlinger (2-2, 2.93) got a well-deserved win and Ray got the save. Brian McCann reaggravated his ankle during warm-ups and will go on the DL now. It will be longer now since he pinch-hit on Tuesday. Travis Smith declined his assignment and is a free agent. Horacio Ramirez returns tomorrow against Sean Marshall.
