John Smoltz threw a complete game 4 hitter as the Braves defeated Washington.
Smoltz (3-2) walked 1 and struck out 7. It's his 2nd complete game of the season. His only mistake was a 2 run homer by Ryan Zimmerman.
The Braves got on the board first with a 2 run first. McCann, still in the 5 hole, got an RBI single then Francoeur got an RBI on a fielder's choice. They added another run in the 4th when LaRoche hit a liner up the middle off the pitcher Ramon Ortiz, who threw it away allowing LaRoche to get to 3rd. Langerhans knocked him in to make it 3-0.
After Zimmerman's homer in the 5th, the Braves got some insurance with 3 runs in the 7th as Ortiz ran out of steam.
Brian McCann leads the league in throwing out potential basestealers in addition to being among the league leaders in batting average. He's awesome and is only 22.
Offensive contributors: McCann was 2-2, walked twice, and had an RBI. Marcus Giles was 2-5 with a double and scored. Chipper Jones was 1-2, walked twice, and scored twice extending his hitting streak to 11 games. Andruw Jones was 1-2 with a walk, an RBI, and scored. Jeff Francoeur was 1-4 with 3 RBIs extending his hitting streak to 10 games.
The Mets trail Milwaukee by 4, but the Phillies lead late.
