Braves 8, Nationals 5

on .

The Braves got off the deck in the 9th inning, and won it on a 2 out Jeff Francoeur grand slam against Chad Cordero. Facing a 5-3 deficit in the 9th, McCann, who came in late as a defensive replacement but really for his bat, hit the first pitch off Cordero into the right field seats to make it 5-4. Langerhans pinch-hit and hit the next pitch up the middle for a single. Giles hit the next pitch into left field to put runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. Renteria then put down a decent bunt, but Cordero made a nice play and throw to get Langerhans at 3rd. Chipper then followed with an infield single. Andruw was called out on strikes on a fastball that looked inside off the plate for the 2nd out. Then Francoeur sent the stadium into hysterics on the 2nd pitch, lining it over the left field wall for his first career grand slam, a walk-off game winner. Jorge Sosa was decent for the first part of the game, but was solved in the 6th. With a 3-2 lead and 2 outs, shortstop Royce Clayton doubled. Then pitcher Michael O'Connor hit a ground ball that made it through to tie it. Braves killer Alfonso Soriano then hit a 2 run homer to give Washington the 5-3 lead that lasted until the 9th. Sosa went 5.2 innings, allowing 5 runs on 9 hits, 2 walks, and 5 strikeouts. His ERA is up to 6.52 and he would have gone to 0-6. Ray got the last out in the 6th and pitched a scoreless 7th. Villarreal pitched a scoreless 8th, and Reitsma (1-1) pitched a scoreless 9th. Offensive contributors: Francoeur was 2-5 with his 7th homer, doubled, had 5 RBIs, and extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Marcus Giles has been coming out of his slump, tonight going 3-5 with a double and scored. Andruw Jones was 2-5 with an RBI and a run. Edgar Renteria was 1-3, walked twice, and scored twice. Chipper Jones was 1-4 with a walk and scored, extending his hitting streak to 12 games. Todd Pratt was 1-2 with his first homer as a Brave. Brian McCann hit his 4th homer in his only at-bat, raising his average to .354. The Mets and Phillies both won tonight, so the Braves kept pace. Thomson against Tony Armas tomorrow.
