Dbacks 13, Braves 0

on .

I predicted a loss for this game, and it actually turned out worse than expected. Brandon Webb threw a complete game shutout and improved to 7-0 for Arizona. As you can see in the last post, the only good news of the night was Brian McCann's injury turning out to be only a sprained ankle after a collision at home plate. That and the fact that both the Mets and Phillies lost, so the Braves did not lose any ground. But the Braves are back below .500. Travis Smith (0-1) did okay for a spot starter, going 4.1 innings and allowing 4 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits, a walk, and a strikeout. Obviously, not good enough to offset a shutout, but I expected worse. Chad Paronto finished the 5th inning, after allowing an inherited runner to score he got a double play. But then Arizona teed off on their former relievers. Lance Cormier, in his first appearance from the DL, gave up 6 runs in 1.2 innings. His ERA bloated up to 5.94. Then Oscar Villarreal gave up 3 runs in 1.1 innings as his ERA rose above 4. After Reitsma's struggles last night, it will be interesting to see who fills what roles now. Ken Ray is very close to becoming the closer, while Chad Paronto and Mike Remlinger keep having good outings as well. McBride and Villarreal have been useful. Offensive contributor: Chipper Jones was 2-4. Giles and Renteria both got the day off. Orr and Betemit both took o-fers in their place. Tim Hudson will go against Juan Cruz as the Braves try to salvage the last game of this series.
