McCann Diagnosis: Sprained Ankle

on .

Brian McCann left Saturday night's game after a collision at the plate with Eric Byrnes, and has been diagnosed with a left lateral sprained ankle. This is fortunate, because it looked like it could have been a lot worse. They say it's day-to-day, although I think that's too good to be true. He'll probably go on the 15 day DL and hopefully he can come back in 15 days like Chipper did when he sprained his ankle and knee. Candidates to be called up to help Todd Pratt catch are Brayan Pena, Carlos Mendez, and top prospect Jarrod Saltalamacchia (aka Salty). None of them are doing particularly well right now. Pena is hitting .216/273/270 with no homers and 6 RBIs at Richmond and throws like an unathletic girl. (Unathletic being politically correct, of course there are many athletic females.) He has the worst catcher's throwing arm I've ever seen. Mendez is hitting .281/297/377 with 2 homers and 20 RBIs at Richmond in about the same amount of ABs as Pena. Salty has gotten off to a slow start at Mississippi, hitting .212/311/336 with 4 homers and 17 RBIs, although those stats are good compared to the other two.
